sharjah

Reputed for its rich natural environment offering a unique mix of diverse topography, Sharjah has been steadily climbing the eco-hospitality and sustainable tourism ladder. The third largest city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) offers a number of attractions to make the most of the region’s natural attractions as well as manage the impact of tourism on the environment. Get set to immerse yourself in unique experiences and be surrounded with elements of the natural world as we recommend the top ecotourism attractions not to miss when in Sharjah.

Wadi Shees

Characterized by its unique location between tall mountains, providing visitors with an exceptional tourist experience, and a chance to explore the mountain ranges of the region, Wadi Shees is considered one of the prominent projects that encourage ecotourism in the eastern region of Sharjah. Following 500m of winding walkways, visitors can look out over the beautifully designed park which spans over 11,300 sqm, stopping at vantage points to take in the stunning mountain landscape. A fun children’s play area is situated below, along with dedicated BBQ pits, shaded benches, and a spectacular man-made 25-meter-high waterfall.

Those looking to venture beyond the park can follow one of the tracks to Shees Valley for a scenic hiking trail. The path winds between the mountains and runs alongside a picturesque waterway, joining an old village and local farms. There is incredible biodiversity in the area, too. Lucky hikers can spot native species of plants and animals thanks to nearby freshwater sources.

Buhais Geology Park

Buhais Geology Park is built on a former seabed running through an area of great geological significance and is a tribute to the history of the region. It is a pioneering project in the field of ecotourism that aims to introduce visitors to Sharjah’s geological history, and the geological importance of Mount Buhais and archaeological areas surrounding it.

Once inside the Buhais Geology Park, visitors can expect model-based interactive displays that explore Sharjah’s mountains and sand dunes, and learn about the origins of the limestone mountain ranges of Jebel Buhais, and more. Visitors will also have the opportunity to examine local rocks and fossils. The facility features a ramp leading to a central hub and exhibition areas, and an outdoor trail that links the pods.

Kalba Conservation Reserve

Kalba Conservation Reserve is home to remarkable landscapes, diverse ecosystems and activities for every nature enthusiast. Khor Kalba encompasses three major places to visit in Sharjah. The Kalba Bird of Prey Centre is perfect for an experience with falconry, the Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Centre offers many trails to choose from for a scenic hike, and the Al Hafiya Picnic Park is a lush and beautiful setting to share a meal.

For people of all ages and interests, there are pristine waters for kayaking close to the mangrove forest. As a group or for a family with children, there are also several spots near the water to pitch a tent and enjoy the weather in Kalba under a star-studded sky. Kalba is the ultimate wildlife conservation destination with plenty of things to do with kids as well as nature lovers.

Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Centre

Spread over 12 sq km in the Khor Kalba area, Al Hefaiyah Conservation Centre is home to 30 native mountain and desert species.

With successful wildlife conservation measures, this Kalba centre is home to various species native to the desert habitat. It is also one of the only parks in Sharjah with indoor exhibits, featuring snakes, lizards, hedgehogs and scorpions. Larger landscaped enclosures are dedicated to the Arabian leopard, wolf, tahr and caracal or desert lynx. A guided tour is a great family experience.

Kalba Bird of Prey Centre

The Kalba Bird of Prey Centre has free-flying demonstrations, along with aviaries housing owls, eagles, buzzards, vultures and, of course, falcons. Using live demonstration and displays, the centre introduces visitors to a host of native raptor species, highlighting the region’s wildlife landscape.

Learn about the importance of resident raptors like the falcon, the national bird of the UAE, and migrating wild raptors, like the Barn owl, Short toed snake eagle, Greater spotted eagle, and Lappet faced vulture. The centre is located in the Khor Kalba nature reserve, one of the “don’t miss places” to visit in Sharjah.
